When it comes to dealing with a breakup, we all handle things differently. After all, you won’t find two people who are in the same exact situation. That is why you have to take any advice that you get from others with a grain of salt. Yes, you may know someone who knew exactly how to deal with a breakup and managed to get on with life just fine, but that is what worked for them – you are different.
Also, keep in mind that your relationship was unique, as were the reasons for the breakup. You are in a unique situation that no one else can really understand.
While it is a good idea to listen to people who have been there and done that, so to speak, the fact remains that you are going to have to deal with this in your own way. Does that mean that you are on your own without any idea of what to do or how to start? Nope, in fact, there are many sources you can access that are going to get you on the road to recovery.
For now, just keep in mind that you are fragile and you may have to do things that are going to help you take your mind off things. One of the best moves you can make at the moment is to make sure that there is nothing around to remind you of the old relationship. Things like pictures of your ex, items that they left behind, and personal gifts are things that you may have to shelve for the time being. Not that you are going to want to get rid of this stuff for good, it is just that you are trying to cope at the moment and the less that is around you to remind you of your ex, the better your chances are going to be to get over it and move on.
And it may not even end with material things. It is one thing to hide pictures and other items that remind you of your ex, but you may also have to deal with things that you have less control over. Perhaps you had mutual friends – where does that leave you with them now? Are you going to be able to maintain those relationships, knowing full well that you may run into your ex at some point? Even if you don’t, are you going to be able to listen to stories about how they are doing without feeling sad and depressed? Maybe it is time to take a break from these people also – at least until the worst of your emotions subside.
Other things to consider when it comes to things that remind you of your ex are the places that you used to go as a couple, places you went on vacation, your work, where you shop, and the list goes on. In fact, you may find that almost everything is going to remind you of your ex in some way. It is up to you to determine how much of this you can handle. After all, you can only change your life so much. Is it any wonder that many people take this time to go on vacation, essentially making sure that they don’t come into contact with their ex under any circumstances.
What it all comes down to is the fact that everyone is different and you are going to have to do whatever works for you. No one really has the hard and fast rules about how to deal with a breakup – it is whatever works for you at the time. Just keep in mind that whatever you do to get your ex out of your mind at the moment does not have to be permanent. In time, you may even find that you are able to carry on with life as you used to without worrying about what your ex is up to. You may even have them as a friend at some point.
